Taken Away

Life happens when we enter the world
Life ends sometime sooner than it should
If we grow up to realize these facts
Then seeing a life cut short is difficult to grasp

Let me explain what sometimes occurs
Pointed out at as taboo to discuss as it were
Labeled as a still or sleeping child's birth
We begin to measure how much life is worth

Taking for granted the love we receive
We take it and leave it like leaves on a tree
When the season is right we accept the leaf
We give it love passing along what we received

When the seasons change and the leaf falls down
We accept it as if new love won't let us frown
And we wait for a new leaf to take it's place
We forget what the last leaf left in it's wake

But what happens when we change love to life?
This is my dilemma and the cause of strife
Life isn't replaceable like leaves on a tree
Once life is gone we can do nothing but grieve

If a life is long lived and their time has come
We don't try to resolve it with hopeless theorems
But when a child is born without the gift of breath
How can we possibly justify this form of death?

It's not fair we scream and curse to those around
A little baby's life stripped from us without even a sound
The devastation is difficult despite support from friends
We look for answers trying to justify why this life had to end

The truth is simple and may be hard to handle
Like a candle being snuffed, life is that fragile
But the pain I would suffer is nothing compared
To the loss the mother feels when she is unprepared

Expecting to hear a cry when they feel the cold air
Silence in the room and then begins the scare
"I'm sorry", the doctor says with the mask over his face
What else can he do except offer an embrace?

After months of planning and a name being chosen
Our joys are trashed and our lives are frozen
The love for the child was growing for so long
Dreams were dreamt and now it's all gone

We cry at night wondering if we will ever recover
Figuring someday we will.. better late than never
So we deal with the sorrow and accept the pain
And we heal with time and stop trying to place the blame

If you know of a mother who has suffered
Please be loving and above all be gentle
Emotions can be a force too strong to resist
When a child is taken without taking a glimpse
